GCX: The GCX is our new gravel and cyclocross racing oriented wheelset. We took the very popular Rule and trimmed the rim weight by 50 grams to an industry leading 310 grams (compared to 330 for the ultralight Enve G23). We moved to an asymmetrical profile front and rear, and reduced the spoke count to 24. The internal width remains the very popular 22mm while the depth has been reduced from 30mm to 28mm. New for 2020, logos have been updated to a gloss black for a clean look that highlights color selections and complements any frame.

The result is an astonishingly light, great looking wheelset that remains very stiff laterally thanks to the improved bracing angle that results from the asymmetrical rim shape. The wheel rides lighter due to the significant reduction in rotating weight and the feel is noticeably snappier. High speed cornering as is common in American style cyclocross is excellent even with the ultralight weight due to our build process and the improved dish of the asymmetrical profile. Wheelset weights range from 1,260 grams (DT350) to 1,190 grams (DT240 or Industry 9). This is unheard of in a dependable, race ready wheel. These are not special use only, once a year wheels.

Race performance compared to the Rule is improved in every regard, which was the design intent. So why still consider the Rule? The GCX rim requires compromises to achieve a no holds barred race wheelset. The Rule, at a feathery 360 grams vs incredibly light 300 grams, is a very solid  rim that builds into a dependable wheelset under 1400 grams that any size rider will get years of trouble free service from. The Rule uses an excellent, proven rim that is a miniature version of our great Grit XC race wheel, featuring molded in spoke holes, not drilled, an extremely shallow bead that makes mounting tires easy, and with a softer, rounded bead profile to prevent sidewall cuts.

With the GCX, we moved to an asymmetrical profile for strength, but that requires drilling the spoke holes. 24 spokes is 4 less than 28 spokes (check my math here). As a result, each spoke sees about 15% more load and stress.  Everything is maximized or minimized or pushed harder to achieve the highest performing race wheel we can build. Just like a race prepped car verses an off the lot performance car, everything has been massaged and hand tuned  with extreme care. That is the essence of a NEXT Precision Built Wheel.

Photos will be updated soon, note that logos are now gloss black not grey.

All wheels come tubeless taped with premium alloy valve stems installed, ready for you to mount tubeless tires. Valve stems will be color matched to nipple color where applicable. Quick release wheels will be provided with NEXT steel rod skewers for added security with disc brakes. Through axles are not provided with wheels as they are part of the bike frame system.

DT Swiss 350

DT driver with 18 point engagement, straight pull spokes, centerlock (in disc). Front hub has no internal axle, bearings ride directly on through axle or end caps. Lower quality bearings than DT 240. Muted freehub sound. Available in black only. Made in Taiwan.

Industry 9 Torch

I9 MTB or road disc hub, centerlock, 120 point engagement for very fast pick up. Quite light. Good bearings, teflon wiper seal for good protection and low drag. Buzzy freehub sound. Full range of colors available. Made in USA.

Project 321

Beautiful hubs, top quality machining and finish, 6 bolt disc only, angular contact bearings with precise preload adjustment, threaded end caps, large hub flanges, angled flanges to match spoke angle, almost no spoke to hub contact, tension up like a straight pull. Magnetic pawls, 216 point freehub, no springs in freehub. Loud or silent options.  Made in Bend, OR. Comparable to Chris King quality.
