Xplor XL: The Xplor XL is the same 40mm deep rim as the Xplor but drilled 28H. We also build them three cross with the stiffer Sapim Sprint aero spoke or Race butted spoke for increased durability under riders around 190 pounds and up (no limit), or deep woods adventuring or even loaded touring. We recommend a hub using a J bend spoke hub to ensure easy access to spares while bike tripping. The Xplor XL can take whatever you choose to throw at them, with confidence. 

The rims have are great mid aero depth for a balance of speed and light weight. The width, at 24mm internal, is aero optimized for a 28mm to 30mm wide slick road tire. A 28mm tire will generally measure 30mm on the rim. You can also easily run the widest gravel tires that are likely to fit in your frame, including the popular 40mm gravel tires.

We build these with either Shimano/SRAM HG 11 speed freehubs or SRAM XD or new XDR drivers. 

We lace the Xplor XL in a 28 hole, three cross configuration front and rear. We use Sapim CX Sprint spokes in standard build. They are a thicker oval spoke, similar to the CX Ray but thicker and stiffer. We think that the oval spokes look proper on this wheelset so we only go up to a full round, butted Sapim Race, upon request or after discussion about the customer's intended use.

All wheels come tubeless taped with premium alloy valve stems installed, ready for you to mount tubeless tires. Valve stems will be color matched to nipple color where applicable. Quick release wheels will be provided with NEXT steel rod skewers for added security with disc brakes. Through axles are not provided with wheels as they are part of the bike frame system.

DT Swiss 240

Very light, DT driver with 36 point engagement, straight pull spokes, centerlock (in disc), upgraded non ceramic bearings (vs DT 350). Both front and rear hubs have an internal axle, end caps go over the axle and do not contact bearings. Muted freehub sound. Available in black only. Made in Taiwan.


 

DT Swiss 350

DT driver with 18 point engagement, straight pull spokes, centerlock (in disc). Front hub has no internal axle, bearings ride directly on through axle or end caps. Lower quality bearings than DT 240. Muted freehub sound. Available in black only. Made in Taiwan.

Industry 9 Torch

I9 MTB or road disc hub, centerlock, 120 point engagement for very fast pick up. Quite light. Good bearings, teflon wiper seal for good protection and low drag. Buzzy freehub sound. Full range of colors available. Made in USA.

Project 321

Beautiful hubs, top quality machining and finish, 6 bolt disc only, angular contact bearings with precise preload adjustment, threaded end caps, large hub flanges, angled flanges to match spoke angle, almost no spoke to hub contact, tension up like a straight pull. Magnetic pawls, 216 point freehub, no springs in freehub. Loud or silent options.  Made in Bend, OR. Comparable to Chris King quality.
