We've been working hard at this SCS stuff so that Specialized bike owners can have more SCS upgrade options, and so that cross racers have more tubular wheel options that they can put on their SCS Carbon Crux. Diverge owners have been our biggest sales, as a group, which speaks to how good that bike is and how worthy it is of an upgrade over the stock alloy wheels. ...cue marketing shpeel... "Upgrade your Diverge to a set of carbon tubeless ready NEXT 38G and feel the improvement in weight and stiffness."
Anyway, we have a lot, and I mean A LOT, of blood sweat and tears into figuring out the SCS issue before anyone else did. We had no choice. We run a pretty great racing club of cyclocross enthusiasts, and we had about 25 Crux bikes show up in mid August last year with stock clinchers, and our own tubular wheels didn't fit (whelp, that was awkward). So we designed and fabricated a solution involving end caps and, to be extra safe, modified cassettes, and it worked, and the team has literally hundreds of races on them at this point. That work got us some great exposure. We wanted to share that experience with everyone so we did not keep the conversion kit to ourselves, or only available with our wheels. Rather, we took an open source approach. I don't regret it at all. Along the way we also sold some wheels!
Sitting here in May, with all that behind us, we are really thankful for all those SCS wheel sales, because that is where we make the money that allows us to support clubs and racers. That revenue is what allows us to partner with Helen Wyman via the NEXT Wyman Project (check it out here) to help transition women riders into successful careers at the World Cup level. That takes piles of dollars. We need to sell wheels to do that. As were discussing ways to promote more wheels sales, the idea of making the SCS conversion kit only available with the purchase of NEXT wheels came up. SCS is a good point of leverage for us. It didn't feel like the right thing to do, though, so instead we decided use that leverage it to reward people for investing in our wheels. What does that mean? That means that from now on, the SCS kit is free when you buy wheels. I have added it to the list of axle and end cap options available with the 38G, the 28M, and the soon to be released 2016 38CX tubular.
So there you go - buy our wheels, and we will spend your money supporting cycling. Honest. All of it. All proceeds go towards junior cycling, club level development, and helping women break into the world cup circuit and start careers as professional cyclocross racers. We hope that when you are deciding who to buy your new wheels from you will decide to pays it forward with NEXT.
